Sir,

I have read with interest the recent editorial in the Journal.[1] As I read Dr. Aggarwal's thoughts, I think that the debate is not whether research is important. As he states it, it is. The more pressing question is how do we create a structure to foster it and integrate it into our daily lives.

Some institutions have set up dedicated centers for research. Cases in point include the Population Health Research Institute at the McMaster University, Toronto, Canada, which focuses on cardiovascular diseases, and the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis at the University of Mainz, Germany, which focuses on acute pulmonary embolism.

It is time that Indian medical institutions take a longer-term perspective and set up similar research teams and centers. This is likely to be a very steep climb with a variety of challenges, but the scale of impact of developing these will also be very high.
