Sir,

We read with interest the excellent article by Selvaraj et al.[1] We applaud the authors for discussing the challenges in tobacco control. We would like to draw attention to some important issues pertaining to ocular morbidity caused by tobacco smoke. The risk of various ocular diseases is known to be increased by tobacco smoking. These conditions include nuclear cataract, age-related macular degeneration, retinal ischemia, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, Graves' ophthalmopathy,[2] idiopathic ophthalmoplegia,[3] tobacco amblyopia,[4] and conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia.[5] The list of ocular morbidities attributable to tobacco smoking is much more. While life-threatening complications of tobacco smoking have received much attention, the ill effects of smoking on eye health are often underappreciated. We would like to emphasize that adequate knowledge needs to be shared on various aspects of ocular involvement in smokers.
